6/13/2024 Fishing Report
June is the month when the first of the salmon show up. There have been a few kings caught around Fish Creek and Lena, but so far there are not very many around. These smaller tides should stack a few up, but these fish will end up getting targeted heavily by people trolling on the boats. This can make finding a fish that wants to eat a fly extremely tough. Tutti fruity Mega Llamas, as well as pink/white and chartreuse/white are excellent options. Pink Mr. Bodangles is also a top producing king salmon fly.
Reports from last Saturday indicate there are some sockeye already showing up in Windfall Creek. Have a selection of flies in different colors and weights for you best shot at success. Patience is key when targeting these notoriously tight-lipped fish. Contrary to what you may have heard, sockeye will eat flies, you just need to put what they want in front of the right fish! Remember, this fishery is only open Saturday and Wednesdays the month of June only. All other fishing in Windfall Creek is closed until August.
The Dolly fishing remains as good as we have seen for several years. The beaches are still producing nice fish, but there are also already Dollies showing up in the freshwater streams around town. It probably has a pretty close correlation, but we know a few chums have been caught off the beaches as well. It's looking like the runs are going to continue to be early this year.
As always, we love featuring your photos for our fishing reports. If you have a great fish, scenery, or action photo that has to do with fishing around town send it our way! You can email photos or videos to cory@alaskaflyfishinggoods.com. Please remember to handle fish with care, especially if you are practicing catch and release. Consider getting a net with a rubber basket to help land fish quickly, pinch your barbs and keep them in the water until you are ready to snap a quick photo.
See you on the water!
